This is a totally new art fair that I am pumped to check out!  Over 200 local artisans, crafters, and DIY enthusiasts will be bringing their locally handcrafted goods to the community over two days!  They have two other locations in Denver and Phoenix, so my readers from those cities will be able to find the quality artisans that have been curated by the talented founders of Jackalope Arts.  Nice!

I found some of my amazing Shop Small Saturday Showcase features on their vendor list, so I will definitely be catching up with Clay & Fabric, Foxboxes, Hallo Jak, Kheel's, Squshies, TeaDrops, Wood Brain, and Zazu Faure.  Then, I will be sure to find some fresh new shops for future features to share with you all!  So excited!

Wrap-Up: Craft-Shows Galore

Last week, I shared my wrap-up on all the food adventures that you missed out on while I was studying for my test.  There was so much food, that I had to break it up into Part 1 & Part 2!

In the last several weeks, I attended a few fun craft events that I wanted to share with you.  It was so much fun, and this is just a fraction of the pictures I took of all the fun.  Exciting!

In this post (jump to):

Wrap-Up: Craft-Shows Galore on Diane's Vintage Zest!

Etsy Craft Party at Crafted at the Port of Los Angeles

On June 6th, Crafted at the Port of Los Angeles, held the 3rd annual Etsy Craft Party on their grounds.  It was so much fun!

Wrap-Up: Craft-Shows Galore on Diane's Vintage Zest!

Crafted just celebrated their 2nd anniversary, so they had lovely totes for anyone who Instagram-ed and tagged a picture of the event.  It was a good idea to tote all of the craft party items back home!

Here are a few of the projects that were set up all around the area.  The cute succulent mason jar in the middle was featured on the morning news!

There were also free craft booths where you could make cute projects.

Weekly Wrap-Up: Bite at the Beach & more!

This week was much less crazy than last week, thank goodness!  In a way, I was making sure to prep for an event that I had been looking forward to all week: Bite at the Beach!

Precap (jump to):

Weekly Wrap-Up on Diane's Vintage Zest!

On Friday, we grabbed a quick dinner at Corner Bakery, which I recapped on The Episodic Eater!

Weekly Wrap-Up on Diane's Vintage Zest!

Now, to Bite at the Beach!  It was a fantastic event!  Really, what a way to spend an awesome weekend.  To see the whole thing, with tantalizing dish descriptions, even more photos, and to see the discussion panels with a few faces you might recognize from The Food Network, head on over to The Episodic Eater!

Now, for just a nibble of Bite at the Beach!  :)

Weekly Wrap-Up on Diane's Vintage Zest!

Just so you know, the event paired craft beers with restaurants, so you know that both my man and I were happy!  This was about 1/3 of the brewery & restaurant booths, so you know we had a ton to see!

Weekly Wrap-Up: Exploring L.A.!

Originally, I had zero plans for this weekend, but then my friend and I decided to catch a last minute craft fair and have fun being tourists in our own city!

Weekly Wrap-Up: Exploring L.A. on Diane's Vintage Zest!

I invited my friend to go to the Echo Park Craft Fair, which was not in my original upcoming events post.  It seemed like it might be cool and had some shops I hadn't seen before, so we met up!

Weekly Wrap-Up: Exploring L.A. on Diane's Vintage Zest!

It was kind of a strange craft show: very crowded, dark, and not conducive to showing off the best of the goods.  Still, I did find some awesome features for Shop Small Saturday Showcase!

Weekly Wrap-Up: Exploring L.A. on Diane's Vintage Zest!

However, outside the craft fair was something pretty awesome: the Oaxacan Quesadilla Cart!

The fresh, handmade blue corn tortillas were shaped and formed for a long line of hungry people.  To see the whole process and where to find the cart, check out The Episodic Eater!

Weekly Wrap-Up: Artisanal LA & more!

This weekend was really fun and the start to the craft show season, as I mentioned in last week's post of upcoming events.  Let's get to it!

Weekly Wrap-Up on Diane's Vintage Zest!

On Saturday, my guy went to a beer festival with some of his friends and although it would have been fun, I ended up catching up with my friend.   We spent a ton of time chatting about blogging and how to get started.  Sometimes we are crafty and cook together, but it was just a major gabfest!  P.S. - She is the one I mentioned in my Blogging 101 series post yesterday.  :)

Afterwards, we met with my family at Casa Inka and had yet another Peruvian meal!  This time it was much more casual and traditional.  :)  This dish was absolutely fantastic!

Weekly Wrap-Up on Diane's Vintage Zest!

And how could you go to a Peruvian restaurant without ordering ceviche!  For more, including the beautiful and tasty fish, chicken, and vegetable dishes that we ordered, visit The Episodic Eater for the full meal and photos!

The next day, my guy and I hit up Artisanal LA.  I was extremely excited to go because this was my first show and I could finally make it!

Oh my word.  In the next month, I have so many events to attend!  In fact, there is a weekend with three different events plus my dad's birthday, so I have to skip a couple.  However, I wanted to share a few of the awesome events that I will be attending in Southern California over the next couple months.  Let me know if you'll be attending and we can meet up!

Weekly Wrap-Up: Food & Fun Errands... Yes, FUN errands!

This week was a blur and with so much work to be done, I saved up a few errands for the weekend.  But I snuck a couple of fun ones into the mix and with a bunch of restaurants to try, it was a really fun week!

Precap (jump to):

Friday

Once again, I had my woodworking class and I finished up my second project ever!  I do promise to share the final projects with you, but I want to make sure I have them stained, painted, and sealed before I take the pictures...and I'm honestly a bit nervous to finish them up!  Soon though, soon...

I visited Amor Y Tacos again (remember the first time?) and it was soooo good!  Nothing could beat the Amor Chile Relleno Burger, but I'm going to visit again soon...  you know for research purposes!  Check out the whole meal, including some scrumptious tacos on The Episodic Eater.

Saturday

We had a bunch of errands to do, but first we met up with my mom and sister for a quick lunch at cha2o, including this Veggie Hot Pot.  Check it all out here!

One of my fun errands was getting to shop for a wallet!  My current pink one was huge and about 10 years old.  I did love the amount of storage and the fact that it was easy to pick out of a dark purse.  I received the Tory Burch one below for Christmas, but it was much too small for all of my wallet contents.  I would have needed a second wallet!  I was in serious angst about returning a gift, but I just knew it would sit around collecting dust.  :(

I did some research and found out that it only came in this size, but I could exchange it and see if there was something else that I could use.  Fun!

Weekly Wrap-Up: Carnival time in Vegas!

This was a busy, busy week before Christmas!  We had so much fun, and I for one am completely tuckered out.  It's a good thing that the holidays are almost upon us so I can get a bit of a break.  :)

Precap:

  • Sights: Road trip to Vegas!
  • Eats: Nick's on 2nd, Pamplemousse Le Restaurant, Carnival of Cuisine, Public House, Grimaldi's Pizzeria, Bouchon

Before all of the fun Las Vegas weekend stuff, I had a quick lunch with my mom during the workweek.  We headed to Nick's on 2nd and I had the most delicious dessert... Warm Butter Cake!  If anyone knows a similar recipe, let me know.  :)  To see all of the delicious pictures, head to The Episodic Eater on this post!

Friday

And then we were off to Vegas for the weekend!  Here are a couple pretty pictures of our ride over.  :)

 photo LasVegas1_zpsf977ce49.jpg

I love this picture of the rainbow sky over the desert mountains.  :)

 photo LasVegas2_zps04b2e52e.jpg

For dinner, we went to Pamplemousse Le Restaurant and had a nice welcome dinner to Las Vegas.  Check out this incredible crudités platter!  See all of the deliciousness right here.  :)

Saturday

In the morning, my guy and I hit the outlet malls and I may have purchased just a few things...  :)  First, I had some new Kenneth Cole boots (to replace my favorite, worn-out black ones) and an awesome leather jacket also from Kenneth Cole.  Also, I bought a few festive tops, a pretty belt, and a winter jacket from Banana Republic (I heart that store), plus a chambray shirt & statement necklace from J. Crew.  I went all out since I have not bought winter clothing in forever and the deals were too ridiculously good to pass up!

Now, for the reason we were there!  We went to the Carnival of Cuisine, which is an amazing food event.  Tons of restaurants from The Palazzo and The Venetian have tables all around the pool area and you sample so much incredible food.

Weekly Wrap-Up: Macklemore, Unique L.A. and food adventures!

This was another busy week!  It was like a carbon copy of last week actually with another concert, craft show, and LOTS of food.  But before we get to all of the fun, here are last week's posts in case you missed them!

Now, to the fun times!

Wednesday

I was sooo tired for the Macklemore concert, but I sucked it up to have a great time with my guy and some friends.  :)

First, we grabbed a quick bite at Mendocino Farms.  Check out the whole spread we ordered here on The Episodic Eater, including this Steak Sandwich on a Pretzel Bun, and the most awesome wall decor I've seen in a long time!

I did not bring my camera, so I hope you don't mind this phone shot.  Then, when all heck broke loose on stage, I just partied it up!  So that means no picture, but I'll get the ones my guy took with his phone later!

We headed up to WP24 afterwards to hit the bar, but of course it was closed for a private party.  It has the greatest views and delicious food, but I'll have to save it for next time!

Handmade Gift Feature & GIVEAWAY from Maiden Voyage Clothing Co.

The latest feature for "25 Days of Handmade Gifts" comes from Maiden Voyage Clothing Co. and I love everything about this duo!  Tyson and Klara are just the sweetest and I'm so happy I had the chance to catch up with them again this Sunday at Patchwork.  As I mentioned in the wrap-up post, their vintage-inspired illustrations are ever-so "slightly weird and wonderful."  Just so you know, it's a compliment!  I think you'll notice from their awesome business card below that they like a little bit of weird.  :)  Anyways, the illustrated shirts would be a great gift for the man in your life, as well as the simple leather wallets.  The Cryptozoology patches are so fun too!

For the giveaway (!) Tyson, Klara, and their adorably named cats are offering the winner a choice of any of their illustrated posters!  I am partial to the "Anatomy of a Sailor," but my two runners-up are the "Narwhal: Unicorn of the Sea" and "Phrenology of a Gentleman" posters below.  There are even more awesome ones to pick from, so I'll let you decide!

********************

Tell me a little bit about yourself!

We're a husband and wife team. And have found that running a business beside our respective spouse is sometimes a challenge, we'll admit, but we love a challenge. Since it's just the two of us right now, we've worn just about every hat there is in the business. However, Tyson primarily does the designing and Klara primarily does the business; the rest is shared. Occasionally, our two cats, Spicket & Sprocket take on supervisory roles - which is a huge help. And of course, the Amazing Friends Team assembles to lend a hand when things get really hectic!

Where did the name of your store come from?

We had decided to start a t-shirt line, but weren't sure what to call it. Simultaneously, Tyson was restoring an antique bicycle and when it was complete he exclaimed, "Let's take it on it's maiden voyage!" And at that point we had our name.

-132 Maiden Voyage Clothing Co

Why did you start making goods for Maiden Voyage?

So we could stop working for the man!

What is your favorite item?

Hmm... we don't really have a favorite, but think our Cryptozoology items have brought a lot of customers' colorful stories into our lives. People share their experiences as would-be Cryptozoologists or simply their encounters or childhood memories of these lovable creatures.

-131 Maiden Voyage Clothing Co

What is your most popular item?

We don't really have a "most popular item"... people with lots of different interests seem to find something they enjoy in what we've created.

Where do you get the inspiration for your work?

We tend to lean toward topics that are weird in nature; the unexplainable, mysterious, science fiction, fantasy, folktales, legends, myths, quirky and odd are all good descriptors. Designs that can convey narrative are also very appealing to us. We really enjoy researching topics that are slated to be designed and this is where we really start to pick out the little nuances that make our designs unique. We scour flea markets, thrift stores and the internet in search of old books and articles that will help expand on our knowledge of a topic and give us the tidbits to make a design interesting and fun. And in the end, we really just want to make stuff that we enjoy (and hope others do, too).

-130 Maiden Voyage Clothing Co

What makes your store unique?

We're making things we like and our collection of creations is unique, in that it comes from our personal experiences, artistic style and preferences. There are tons of other people doing what we do, we just try to make ourselves happy with what we're doing and hope that others will find something they can take away that speaks to them.

What is the toughest part about making your goods/your artistic process?

Right now our biggest challenge is finding time. We're always saying if we could just pause time and catch up it would be great! We have so many new ideas that we'd love to get to, but just can't seem to carve out the time to create them. Soon!

-133 Maiden Voyage Clothing Co

When is the last day I can order in time for Christmas Day?

It's best to check the USPS site for your area (domestic or international) and if you're uncertain, contact us before ordering to be certain your package will make it in time. Obviously, there are external circumstances, but we always do our best! ;)

Where can I see more of your work and buy a gift?

I'm going to make this wrap-up short and sweet before I get to the giveaway.  If you love their "peculiar flair" as much as I do, make sure to pop over and take a gander at even more of the great illustrations.  Also, you'll want to pick out your favorite poster if you want to enter...

Handmade Gift Feature & Promo with Kheel's!

For today's "25 Days of Handmade Gifts" feature, I am sharing the really original work from Kheel's!  From all that L.A. has to offer, the artist is inspired by everything, including something extra unique: L.A. strip mall signs and local street art!  He also does custom work on any of his items, including his pillows, hats, and "Profane Pennants."  One of my favorites would be the script felt words, which would be a great personalized gift for anyone!

********************

Tell me a little bit about yourself!

The first time I worked with fabric was for an art piece I created about Oakland Raiders Superfans (which can be seen on my Etsy page).  I decided to use felt as the medium and immediately felt something click. I think it might be a connection to my recent ancestors who were in the New York garment trade (and whose company was housed in the Kheel Tower, which still stands in NYC).  Once I began using fabric I took a wide range of classes around Los Angeles (Blue Rooster, Sew LA, Art Center, ACP) to learn more about the medium and how to use it.

Where did the name of your store come from?

My last name, Kheel and the connection to my family history.

Patchwork Show Wrap-Up & "25 Days of Handmade Gifts" Series!

Last week, I posted about how excited I was to attend the Patchwork Show in Long Beach!  I gave you guys a little preview and had the chance to ask Nicole & Delilah (the awesome founders/organizers of Patchwork) a few questions too.

Today, I'll share as much of the show as I had the chance to photograph.  It was really huge this year!  I had a chance to speak with a bunch of really talented and creative folks and peruse their wonderful handmade goods.  In fact, it was so amazing that I have more than enough folks to cover my next series just in time for the holidays...

25 Days of Handmade Gifts!

For all of the details on the amazing shops involved, interviews with the creators, and giveaways, read on.  But first, on with the (Patchwork) Show!

First of all, can I make you guys jealous?  The walk up to the festival is along the beach, which was only made better by the perfect weather we had!

**1 Entrance

About ready to enter the show, there were tons of people shopping and more than enough handmade goods to go around!

**3 Entrance booth

Located at different spots were all kinds of fun things.  I totally missed the kids DIY, but I'm sure I didn't meet the age requirement.  :)

Here's one of the music tents with an awesome band that had the crowd rocking out.

The ukulele group was so cute!

**129 Music

As for the food, I did a terrible job of documenting what I ate that day.  I had an Avocado Taco from the vegan Seabirds Truck and more tacos from Piaggio on Wheels!  It's the perfect street food.  :)  I was tempted to get a potato from Tornado Potato, but I had some shopping to do!

********************

Mini-Disclaimer Time: There were sooo many awesome vendors and it was impossible to visit all of the booths.  I made my way through almost the entire space and these are the ones that I handpicked to share with you.  They're not giving me anything in return for the features, I just really wanted to promote the handmade movement with some amazing shops where you can get a unique and creative gift.  Show them some love by visiting their stores and stay tuned for the "25 Days of Handmade Gifts" series for posts dedicated to my favorites plus some extras for y'all!

********************

Besides the food trucks along the side offering delicious treats, there were plenty of food artisans with delicious items for sale.  Lucky for me, there were samples of everything and I put together a few of my favorite items to share with you!

Want to give a deliciously perfect gift?

Pernicious Pickling Co:  Have you tried Sour Garlic pickles?  How about Pickled Cauliflower or Pickled Red Onion?  No?  You have to try them!  These guys had so many varieties of pickles to try that I was in heaven.  :)  *Feature & promo here!*

Peppered Up Foods: Griselda introduced me to Peppered Up Foods' entire line of sauces and seasonings.  These sauces, some of them straight from her grandmother, are so awesome that she uses them at her restaurant Sliced and Diced.  *Feature and giveaway here!*

P.O.P. Candy Co.: Maybe this is a little unfair, but I bought this candy at one of my first Patchwork Shows and have been buying it ever since.  I knew this was one of my features before I even arrived!  They have so many great flavors from Pecan to Rosemary Almond and even had two new ones this time: Hot Curry and Carrot Cake.  Yum!  *Feature and giveaway here!*

Announcement: Patchwork Show in Long Beach - November 17th!

*Update* Here is the wrap-up post!

I cannot believe it is time for another Patchwork Show in Long Beach!  For those of you new to the blog, I have been going for the past few years to enjoy all of the handmade goodies and food.  In May, I went to the show in Santa Ana, which I recapped quickly in this post.  By the way, they also have shows in Oakland and Phoenix, plus an edible edition in Costa Mesa for any of you in those cities!

********************

This time, I decided that the show needed to be highlighted in a totally separate post.  I'm not being paid to say any of this or getting anything for promoting the event, but I just think it's so fun and amazing!  So you may be wondering, how awesome is it?

The first time I attended, I was a big food truck chaser and went to try all of the delicious trucks that I heard were attending.  Yum!  Add all of the amazing food from locally made artisans, and I was stuffed!  I was not yet a crafter or sewist and I became inspired to start sewing after YEARS of putting it off when I visited the Long Beach show two years ago.  I saw (and bought) so many lovely and things, that it occurred to me that I could try to take a sewing class and learn how to make simple items that I would love.  I can't wait to see all of the lovely things this year!  I already know that Justine will be there.  Fun!

I contacted Nicole and Delilah, who founded the show 8 years ago, to find out more about this weekend's event.  They were so nice to give me a ton of info and answer a few questions in a mini-interview!  By the way, they are the organizers of Craftcation and have their own blog Dear Handmade Life.  Busy gals!

For any newbies to Patchwork, what goods can I expect find?

SoCal Social 2013 Recap!

I had so much fun this weekend shopping, meeting other bloggers, learning a bit, and making new friends at the SoCal Social!  Thanks to Bev from Flamingo Toes and Viv from The V Spot for organizing an amazing event.  :)

If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen a few of these pictures, but there are lots more pictures to share!  Then, I'll introduce you to a bunch of the nice girls I met and give you the links where you can win swag of your own!  :)

For the first part of the day, we did our swag walk in Old Towne Orange.  We met in the middle of the square, where there was a beautiful fountain.  In fact, later in the day there was a wedding taking place right where we met!  We were given a lanyard with our name badge, an empty tote bag, and a map to find our way around.  Then we set on our way!

168

We first stopped into Tea Leaf Cottage where we picked up our first bit of swag (yay!) and we perused the wares.  This was so pretty!

128

Next door at Provisions, I had to admire the beautiful ceiling, wood paneled wall, and light fixtures.

129

We were treated to beer and beet pickled deviled eggs.  Yum!
