Weekly Wrap-Up: Delicious food & Unique LA show!

This was one action packed week!  We celebrated, ate, shopped, and really had a whirlwind of a time.  Let's get to it!

Precap (jump to):

Weekly Wrap-Up on Diane's Vintage Zest!

This week was my dad's birthday, so he decided to open up a ton of his wines.  This is only 1/3 of the bottles, but I know how much fun they had.  My guy was especially excited to try some of these, since he is becoming an amateur connoisseur, following in my father's footsteps.  :)

Weekly Wrap-Up on Diane's Vintage Zest!

I was more interested in the pickles, olives, and corks that my father's chef friends brought.  I always have dibs on the corks and I may have pilfered a jar or two.  :)

Weekly Wrap-Up on Diane's Vintage Zest!

The next day, my friend and I went to Unique LA!  I loved the holiday show a few months ago, which I recapped here.  :)  I actually think this one was better!

Weekly Wrap-Up on Diane's Vintage Zest!

It was held at the California Market Center on the penthouse floor, with a pretty fantastic view all around the L.A. skyline!  By the way, for any of you street art lovers, my friend pointed out the Banksy at the bottom of the photo.  There was a second one that I was unsure about though on the roof.

Weekly Wrap-Up: New Food Adventures!

This weekend, we had a bunch of fun things to do and I tried three new restaurants for the first time. Triple fun!

Precap:

On Saturday, we went to a beautiful restaurant called Cucina Enoteca to meet up with some of my guy's high school friends.  It was very inspiring for the future garden!

We ordered this amazing pizza.  Just delicious!  I seriously can't pick out what the best dish of the day was, and if you want to see the whole meal along with gorgeous tablescape inspiration, click on over to The Episodic Eater!

I was inspired by someone's delicious grilled cheese, so we hit up The Grilled Cheese Spot on the way back.  It was the restaurant that I actually wanted to go to when we went to Izalco a couple of weeks back.  Boy, was it worth the wait!

Weekly Wrap-Up: Food & Fun Errands... Yes, FUN errands!

This week was a blur and with so much work to be done, I saved up a few errands for the weekend.  But I snuck a couple of fun ones into the mix and with a bunch of restaurants to try, it was a really fun week!

Precap (jump to):

Friday

Once again, I had my woodworking class and I finished up my second project ever!  I do promise to share the final projects with you, but I want to make sure I have them stained, painted, and sealed before I take the pictures...and I'm honestly a bit nervous to finish them up!  Soon though, soon...

I visited Amor Y Tacos again (remember the first time?) and it was soooo good!  Nothing could beat the Amor Chile Relleno Burger, but I'm going to visit again soon...  you know for research purposes!  Check out the whole meal, including some scrumptious tacos on The Episodic Eater.

Saturday

We had a bunch of errands to do, but first we met up with my mom and sister for a quick lunch at cha2o, including this Veggie Hot Pot.  Check it all out here!

One of my fun errands was getting to shop for a wallet!  My current pink one was huge and about 10 years old.  I did love the amount of storage and the fact that it was easy to pick out of a dark purse.  I received the Tory Burch one below for Christmas, but it was much too small for all of my wallet contents.  I would have needed a second wallet!  I was in serious angst about returning a gift, but I just knew it would sit around collecting dust.  :(

I did some research and found out that it only came in this size, but I could exchange it and see if there was something else that I could use.  Fun!

Weekly Wrap-Up: Furniture Shopping & Late Night Eats!

For some reason, I completely forgot last week to include my late night Thursday dinner with my friend, so we'll have to do a mini-rewind for that!

Otherwise, it was a pretty relaxed weekend because I have been completely busy with all of my work, classes, and more.  Whew!

Precap:
  • Eats: Amor Y Tacos, Frostbites Crepes & Frozen Delights
  • Activities: Woodworking, Furniture shopping

Amor Y Tacos

After one of my evening classes, I met up with one of my gal pals to try out Amor Y Tacos nearby.  What a great find!  As you can guess, it is a Mexican restaurant, but the dishes are extremely inventive and interesting.

My dish was the Doritos Chilaquiles, and you can see even more on The Episodic Eater here!  Check out the decor, I mean it's pretty awesome!

 photo AmorYTacos3_zps795885fb.jpg

Afterwards, we had some sweet treats from Frostbites Crepes & Frozen Delights.  This looks pretty normal, but you wouldn't believe the flavor combinations they have!  Here are the ones we tried, but there were other amazing flavors like Flintstones Push Pop, Almond Joy, and Sour Gummy Worm.  Yum!  Find out which flavors we tried on The Episodic Eater.  You'll be surprised!  :)

Now back to this week!  This is my very first woodworking project, and although we are done with it in class, I am about to do some work on it at home.  I'm still trying to decide, but I'll figure it out eventually.  :)

Weekly Wrap-Up: Food & basketball!

Well, I finally have a few things to share with you again for this week's wrap-up!  Lots of food and fun again this week, so we'll just get to it.  :)

Precap:

On Saturday, I had a bunch of errands to run (for future projects that I can't wait to share!), but afterwards we took some time out to go to dinner.  My guy was recognized at work and had a gift certificate to P.F. Chang's.  Besides the desserts above, we had the dishes below.  See the whole dinner at The Episodic Eater!

On Sunday, I did a bit of work on three separate projects.  Woo!  We already had a dinner planned, which I was really looking forward to.  We went to Ditmas Kitchen & Cocktails, which was amazing!  Check out the Short Ribs below!

Weekly Wrap-Up on Diane's Vintage Zest!

Someone else had the Salmon below and there were so many great dishes such as the Poultry (roast chicken), Kale Caesar Salad, Tuna Carpaccio, Steak Tartar, Vidalia Onion Rounds, Butterscotch Pudding, Lemon Meringue dessert, and more!  Check out The Episodic Eater post here!

Weekly Wrap-Up: Retro Row, Honduran food & Raw Chocolate!

The weekly wrap-up for today is basically centered around our plans on Saturday.  As I mentioned in my venting post, I have been super busy.  Still, we took some time out to have some fun in the fun little neighborhood of Retro Row in Long Beach.  There was some serious eating, followed by lots of window shopping and design inspiration!  :)

 photo RetroRow7_zps0e6affd2.jpg
Design inspiration galore!

On Saturday, I was determined to use a Groupon to Honduras Kitchen before it expired.  I was hoping it would be good since I had never eaten Honduran food before...  OMG, I have a new favorite restaurant to add to the list!  If you have never clicked over to The Episodic Eater to read one of my wrap-up posts, you will want to see this one.  Click here to read more about our yellow cherry/passionfruit/guanabana/tamarindo juice choice, our tasting of baleadas, and the amazing fried chicken below!

From my Instagram feed.  Follow me if you want to see more!

Afterwards, we went to Anandamide just down the street and spied all of the treats that the "psychedelic delicatessen" had to offer.  No really, they call it that!  Check it out on The Episodic Eater.

Another Instagram pic!

Then, we were headed off to check out Retro Row!  Fourth Street in Long Beach has some pretty awesome vintage stores, restaurants, and furniture shops.  Let's take a quick peek down the street into the couple of shops that I dragged my fella into!

First of all, this is a pretty awesome way to welcome people to the corner of 4th & Cherry, right?  Check out the headlights.  :)

Welcome to Retro Row!
Do you think my mom would consider planting her succulents in a rusted out car?  Hmmm...

Here are a couple of awesome vintage shops just across the street!

Why Shop Small?

For both this week's and next week's posts, I am taking a bit of time to explain why I think it is important to "shop small" and why I am continuing my "25 Days of Handmade Gifts Series" as the "Shop Small Saturday Showcase!"

First of all, what does it mean to shop small?  Basically, it means that you support the little guy rather than a massive corporation.  Some of you may already be familiar with the concept, because it has been recently gaining in popularity!  You may have heard of Small Business Saturday (the Saturday after Thanksgiving) designed to promote mom-and-pop shops during the busy holiday shopping season.

Here are a few causes that are closely associated with shopping small!
  • Shopping local
  • Buying American
  • Handmade & artisanal goods vs. mass-produced
  • Small-batch vs. Factory made

By shopping small, you automatically support most, if not all, of these worthy goals.  Isn't that a great reason on its own?  Well, if you need more convincing...

Here are my Top 10 reasons for why you should shop small!

1.  Small = Unique!

When you buy from a small shop, you are less likely to end up with the same old item that everyone has.  I would rather have something that is one-of-a-kind, wouldn't you?

Awesome L.A. pillows by Kheel's!

2.  Quality Goods

When items are made by hand or small-batch, that means someone has an eye on practically every part of the process, making sure it passes the test!

The small batch pickles at Pernicious Pickling Co. are so delicious.  :)

3.  Great customer service

Small shops really want their customers to be happy!  That means if you have a concern, they are extremely happy to help, and they definitely know their products.  By the way, because of #2, I have never had a problem.  :)

I loved all of the Peppermint items from Moxxie.  Satisfied customer here!  :)

4.  Supporting your Community & the local economy

When you give your dollar to a small business, that shop owner is more likely to invest their money in local resources for their own business needs.  That means you are helping to build your community!

In fact, the U.S. Department of Commerce reports that every $1 spent on American made products fuels another $1.40 in spending elsewhere in the US economy.  Woo-hoo!

Kat from Santore Company is proud to support her local community!

5.  Friendly shop owners

Small businesses don't have nearly as much red tape between you and the shop owner.  That means that you can talk about anything to them, and I have found that they are always happy to chat.  :)

The gals from Reclamation Dept. were so friendly and told me their whole story from top to bottom!

6.  Custom work!

Because you can talk directly to shop owners (#5) who make everything from start to finish, you can get exactly what you want!  In fact, some of the favorite gifts I have given have been custom items from local, small businesses.

Kate from Small and Great does AWESOME custom work!

7.  Supporting someone's dream!

It is hard to be an entrepreneur, so why not support the little guy!  Most of the shop owners I have spoken to have a day job but their small business is their ultimate dream.  I would love to help achieve that dream, wouldn't you?

For small businesses that have been passed down from previous generations, they need continued support to stay in business.  I love seeing those signs that say how long they have been in business!

33stewartavenue talked about how the long commute to his day job inspires some of his work!

8.  Job creation

When small businesses grow, they create jobs.  Also, they tend to provide better wages and benefits than larger corporations do.  Enough said!

I talked with Tricia and her assistant about the beautiful products from Tricia Ree Ceramics!

9.  Indirectly “pay it forward”

Over 90% of small business owners support their communities through volunteering or donations.  In fact, non-profit organizations receive on average 250% more support from small businesses than from large businesseses!

Olivia from atiliay always gives back with her focus on donating to non-profit organization!

10.  Shopping small means you are buying American!

Why does buying American matter?  ABC World News reported if each American spent just $64 on American-made goods during holiday shopping, the result would be 200,000 new jobs. That's awesome!

Amy & Griselda from Peppered Up Foods use tried and true recipes for their tasty treats!

Some people have also said that shopping small is associated with a reduced environmental impact due to less transportation costs, less waste, and investment in local resources.  I mean, that's a bonus reason on top of 10 really great ones.  :)

I hope you join me in supporting all of the awesome people I have met recently and their small businesses!  See all of the great shops here, if you missed them the first time around.

Do you already focus on "shopping small" or is this new to you?

Weekly Wrap-Up: Delicious Outings & Sad Farewell to a Friend

It was a roller coaster kind of week, and here is the wrap up of it all.

Precap (jump to):

We were still recuperating from New Years Eve when we were invited to go to Il Fornaio.  It looks delicious, doesn't it?

The restaurant itself is gorgeous!  To see all of the delicious food, including the Pappardelle Gialla ai Funghi I ordered, see the post here on The Episodic Eater.

Weekly Wrap-Up on Diane's Vintage Zest!

I was in the area, so I went to Mitsuwa Marketplace to do a little shopping!  I have a sweet tooth, so it's pretty hard for me not to stock up.  :)

Also, there are tons of authentic Japanese items and so many options, like these soy sauces.  To see the entire tour, including the most perfect little mochi cake I have ever seen, click here on The Episodic Eater!

Weekly Wrap-Up: Carnival time in Vegas!

This was a busy, busy week before Christmas!  We had so much fun, and I for one am completely tuckered out.  It's a good thing that the holidays are almost upon us so I can get a bit of a break.  :)

Precap:

  • Sights: Road trip to Vegas!
  • Eats: Nick's on 2nd, Pamplemousse Le Restaurant, Carnival of Cuisine, Public House, Grimaldi's Pizzeria, Bouchon

Before all of the fun Las Vegas weekend stuff, I had a quick lunch with my mom during the workweek.  We headed to Nick's on 2nd and I had the most delicious dessert... Warm Butter Cake!  If anyone knows a similar recipe, let me know.  :)  To see all of the delicious pictures, head to The Episodic Eater on this post!

Friday

And then we were off to Vegas for the weekend!  Here are a couple pretty pictures of our ride over.  :)

I love this picture of the rainbow sky over the desert mountains.  :)

For dinner, we went to Pamplemousse Le Restaurant and had a nice welcome dinner to Las Vegas.  Check out this incredible crudités platter!  See all of the deliciousness right here.  :)

Saturday

In the morning, my guy and I hit the outlet malls and I may have purchased just a few things...  :)  First, I had some new Kenneth Cole boots (to replace my favorite, worn-out black ones) and an awesome leather jacket also from Kenneth Cole.  Also, I bought a few festive tops, a pretty belt, and a winter jacket from Banana Republic (I heart that store), plus a chambray shirt & statement necklace from J. Crew.  I went all out since I have not bought winter clothing in forever and the deals were too ridiculously good to pass up!

Now, for the reason we were there!  We went to the Carnival of Cuisine, which is an amazing food event.  Tons of restaurants from The Palazzo and The Venetian have tables all around the pool area and you sample so much incredible food.

Weekly Wrap-Up: 10th Anniversary plans & Thanksgiving prep!

This week, I did a bunch of really fun things so check them all out!

Precap:

Friday

Our 10th anniversary was on Thursday, but we decided that we would be better off celebrating our special day on a night when we didn't have to get up early the next morning!  As I mentioned here, we had a plan to visit our stomping grounds and have a chocolate wine and strawberries picnic.  But first, we headed to Mio Babbo's to recreate one of our first dates.

Head over to The Episodic Eater to see the whole meal from this beautiful salad below to a lasagna to die for!

Then, we continued to our tour of our alma mater...

A basketball game was going on, so we checked in on that, but the game was sold out.  Oh well.  We continued on to campus, walking up the normally busy walkway!

Weekly Wrap-Up on Diane's Vintage Zest!

We really walked around the entire campus, taking our time to reminisce and comment on the changes, so I just took a couple of photos.  Nothing has changed with this gorgeous building in the middle of campus!
