Tell me a little bit about yourself!

Hi, my name is Candice Strauss, I live with my husband and daughter in Southern California, about 15 minutes from my childhood home, here in the San Gabriel Valley. My dad's in construction (and a life-long picker), and my mom is a true maker (crochet, sewing, & embroidery), so I spent my childhood neck deep in building, crafting, collecting, and treasure hunting.

Where did the name of your store come from?

I wanted something that represented who we are, and we are a family business. If you stop by any of my pop-up shops, you will most likely meet my dad, mom, daughter, or husband.

I couldn't do this without the support of my family. From my dad Johnny, who helps me cut wood and set-up my booths, to my husband Eric, whose man-cave is bit by bit becoming our warehouse, and my daughter Delilah, my fave junkin' companion, the whole family is part of the team. (Though Delilah finds it quite hard to part with a rare bottle or sweet vintage camera, both of which she collects.)

Why did you start making goods for Strauss Vintage Shoppe?

I'm someone who likes learning new art forms and techniques. I have an extensive “creative bucket list,” and last summer I finally learned how to transfer images onto wood. I loved the process! At first I was making them as gifts for friends and family, then I began receiving order requests, and the rest is history.

It's officially summertime!  Being a Southern California girl, I know I get the sun and warmth for more days in the year, but it excites me every time I know it's officially the season for BBQs, pool parties, and soaking up some sun!  This summer, I have so many fun plans in store, which I plan on sharing with y'all.

Most of the plans involve being outside, so I'm definitely making sure to keep my trusty sunscreen handy.  Although I'm one of those lucky people who usually tan quick (not trying to humblebrag), for the first time ever while I was in the Philippines this January, I burned and peeled!  Remember, it's summer there when it's winter here.  :(  It was pretty gnarly, so now I literally feel the pain of everyone who has extra sensitive skin.  This summer, I am definitely taking extra care of my skin with the help of Neutrogena and their award-winning Sun products.

Nature Skin Shop feature!

On this week's Shop Small Saturday Showcase, I have a lovely one to share with you!  I met Terri from Nature Skin Shop in the midst of all the food vendors at Artisanal L.A., and the scents of her pretty products were still able to stand out from the crowd!  Not to mention, she was as cute as a button, in a lovely flower dress that matched her equally lovely bath and beauty items.  :)

I absolutely love her gorgeous products, and because she is so multi-talented, all of the beautiful photos you see below are hers!  Take a look and read through the interview, then tell me you don't want to try every single one of her items.  I dare you!

Tell me a little bit about yourself!

I am a jack of all trades with a short attention span. I like to be creative in many different ways. I am a wannabe artist! Running a soap company gives me the opportunity to move through many projects throughout the day from scent blending, recipe development, web design, and designing and marketing. My background is in photography, web design and Photoshop.

Where did the name of your store come from?

The name of my store originated from the fact that all my products are all natural, and I wanted my store to reflect that with in the name!

Why did you start making goods for Nature Skin Shop?

I’m also a cosmetics junkie! This has lead me to where I am today.

What is your favorite item?

My favorite item is my cleansing conditioner because it is formulated for hair just like mine, which is dry and damaged from being addicted to dying my hair from one color to another.

What is your most popular item?

Sausage & Veggie Deep Dish "Pizza Pies"

I participated in an Ambassador Program on behalf of Influence Central for P.A.N. Cornmeal. I received product samples as well as a promotional item to thank me for my participation.

As you know by now, I definitely consider myself a food explorer!  I totally love trying new foods all around the world when I travel, and then recreating them when I get back home.  The month before I began Vintage Zest, I was in South America where I have traveled a few times.  Right now, I'm working on my perfect arepa recipe, but today I am sharing one of my absolute favorite recipes that I make from time to time, using the same base ingredient: cornmeal!  Cornmeal is such a versatile ingredient that I use it as the base of my deep dish "pizza pies!"  There are several types of cornmeal, but I used the 100% white corn meal from P.A.N. Cornmeal, the number one brand in South America.  It looks almost identical to a regular crust from far away, which is a fun surprise for guests when they cut into it!

I love making this dish because unlike making a traditional pizza crust, the cornmeal version is quick and easy, plus it is gluten-free!  Also, you can customize the toppings to accommodate any dietary restrictions.  That means it is wonderful for a party... plus you could even make mini versions!  You'll just have to adjust the cook time depending on how small you make them because they'll bake up MUCH quicker!

After I made the three versions below, I asked which was the favorite of the bunch.  The feedback was that each one was good... so they couldn't pick!  Initially, I was worried because I had a pizza purist in the taste-testing bunch, but it passed the test.  This is not a direct substitution for a traditional deep dish crust, but everyone always thinks it's really delicious.  Whew!  In all honesty, I couldn't decide if I should call these cornmeal tarts, deep dish "pizzas," or something else instead, but I just know this dish is a crowd pleaser.  :)

Now, let's get to the recipe!

Now, let's meet the team behind Denise's Doodles!

Denise's Doodles feature on Shop Small Saturday Showcase at Diane's Vintage Zest! #dessert #cookies

********************

Tell me a little bit about yourself!

Hi, I’m Denise! My husband and I started Denise’s Doodles back in 2011. I’m the baker and he’s the business.

I have extensive experience in the retail baking industry, having worked for Mrs. Field's Cookies and Ghirardelli Chocolate. Most importantly, I have a serious love affair with all things sweet! I love baking. I have been baking cookies and brownies for my friends and family for years. It brings great joy to my heart when people enjoy the treats I bake for them. In my book, dessert always comes first.

Where did the name of your store come from?

We thought of other names with snickerdoodles or cookies, but when one imagines having a store, there is no better name than your own.

Denise's Doodles feature on Shop Small Saturday Showcase at Diane's Vintage Zest! #dessert #cookies

Why did you start making goods for Denise’s Doodles?

I wanted to make a sweet treat for my husband, who does not have a sweet tooth, like I do. I pulled out a classic recipe for snickerdoodles that I’ve had for years. He had no idea what a snickerdoodle was, but he loved it! After he brought them to work and everyone kept asking for more, we knew we were onto something. The final test was placing a plate of cookies on the table at a party, walking away, then noticing that they were gone in 15 minutes, and some partygoers had three or four apiece. This is when we knew it was time to mobilize for world snickerdoodle domination!

DIY Painted Photo Backdrops

If you follow me on Instagram, you would have seen a sneak peek of the project I am sharing with you today.  It has taken a couple of months, but I wanted to show you exactly how I have been using them for both Vintage Zest and The Episodic Eater!

I made these boards at my first ever food blogger event, which was kismet, because these were on my "To Craft" list for the longest time!  I don't always have the best light to take photos in the kitchen, so sometimes I have to run around the house.  I might end up in the living room and sometimes I have to open the front door and take pictures on the floor!

With the photo backdrops you don't end up seeing an unappetizing couch or flooring under my dishes, so they come in handy!  These were super easy to make, even to this painting newbie.  I chose some crazy colors, but they are customizable to your needs.  Check it out!

Chicken & Veggie Coconut Curry

This post is sponsored by Foster Farms®, the opinions expressed are my own.

I cannot believe it is already June, which means summer is right around the corner!  I have another beautiful, healthy, easy, and delicious recipe for you today, which takes minutes to prepare and will be a fresh addition to your summer menu.

As you know, I enjoy cooking simple and healthy dishes and this Chicken & Veggie Coconut Curry is one of my favorites!  The colors are vibrant, the curry is slightly sweet and spicy, and the ingredients are fresh.  Perfect for summer!

Although I usually talk about how I love cooking healthy recipes, sometimes I skip the actual ingredients themselves.  In this curry recipe, I used the new Simply Raised fresh chicken from Foster Farms®, which is already in stores throughout California, Oregon, and Washington.  Along with the Fresh & Natural and Organic lines, the chickens are American Humane Certified, 100% natural, and locally grown.  Simply Raised also means no antibiotics are ever used and the chickens are given 100% vegetarian feed.

Before I get to the recipe, I wanted to mention that these ingredients are readily available, so you do not have to worry about finding an obscure ingredient at a specialty store.  Also, no special equipment is needed at all.  Try it once and you'll see how easy it is!

You'll thank me later once you taste how wonderful the chicken is, how succulent the vegetables are, and how aromatic the entire dish is.  Enjoy!

A Little Delight feature & GIVEAWAY!

On this week's Shop Small Saturday Showcase, I have such an adorable shop to share with you all!  I was at last year's Patchwork show in Santa Ana for just a little bit, and on my way out I saw Blair of A Little Delight packing away the cutest accessories!  I knew it was closing time, but I asked if she would liked to be featured here.  Lucky for us, she said yes!

I caught up with her and the family at Patchwork this year and was reminded in person of how obsessed I am with everything she makes!  Honestly, it will be pretty difficult for the winner of this week's giveaway to choose their favorite.  It's a good thing then that for this week's giveaway, Blair is giving away two bows to a lucky readers!

But first, check out the interview and some gorgeous photos courtesy of A Little Delight!

Tell me a little bit about yourself!

HI! My name is Blair and I am the half owner, and (half) bow maker of A Little Delight. I am a wife to a handsome teacher, the momma of 2 sweet toddlers, a natural life loving vegetarian, coffee addict, glitter and confetti obsessed, tattooed crafter!  And of course, am so passionate about my accessory business, A Little Delight!

We love handcrafting these high quality hair bows, picking out fun modern fabrics, and I absolutely LOVE making friends and chatting with shoppers at craft fairs/boutiques! But I definitely don't do this alone! My wonderful husband Sean does a ton of the work making bows, handles a lot of the social media side of the business, shipping,  and takes care of all the Etsy shop back end stuff! We also have the most awesome shop assistant, Chloe. She helps with lots of important things, including packaging orders, prepping products, and wraps up those important loose ends! All together, we make a pretty fun team!

Where did the name of your store come from?

To be honest, it kinda just came to me. I wanted something fun and a little whimsical, and I liked that it gave us room to grow our product line. And really, who does not love a little delight in their lives?! ;)

A Little Delight feature on Shop Small Saturday Showcase at Diane's Vintage Zest! #hairbows #bows

Why did you start making goods for A Little Delight?

I have always loved making things, and when my daughter was born, I was SO excited about having a girl and finally being able to go crazy with accessories. Most of the bows I purchased for her would end up completely bent our of shape and not very wearable anymore. I also quickly noticed that there was a big need for some really fun modern prints out there! So I started making these sturdy, modern, perky little bows for her, that could also double as a baby bow tie for my son - and our signature lined bows were born! It did not take long for friends to want to buy some, and it really just took off from there.

What is your favorite item?

My favorite bow changes from day to day (I am always posting my "new favorite" on Instagram). We choose every print with a keen eye, looking for modern, fun, trendy fabrics, and we really do our best to not stray from that. So its so easy to just fall in love with each pattern all over again ALL the time! I have to say though, that I really love our modern floral and metallic prints right now!

DIY Industrial Pipe Stools

This week, I have a fun DIY that I first saw on another blog and knew I had to try it out!  I am all about spreading my love of handmade to others, so when I found out that someone was in the market for new stools, I immediately suggested these pipe stools!

Small disclaimer:  I did not take a picture of the final DIY because the price tag stickers were not removed at the time and the wood round was eventually swapped.  Still, I'm pretty proud of how these turned out!

For the full tutorial, head on over to Love Grows Wild and check it out!  I have a few additional tips for you, so read on!

Here are the majority of my starting materials which cost a little more than expected, but not nearly as much as a similarly-styled stool.

Next, came the building process!  Before you start, here are a few items that I suggest you use as well to make life much easier:

Roasted Butternut Squash & Spinach

For this week's recipe, I have an interesting flavor combination for you that came about when there were limited ingredients on hand, and I wanted to keep things healthy.  As you know, I am a complete carb addict, so if there isn't pasta, bread, or rice involved, it's hard to keep me satisfied.  However, this dinner was surprisingly filling for this girl, so I knew that I had to share!

Personally, I love the sweetness of the caramelized butternut squash and onions, contrasted with the savory spinach and nuttiness of the toasted pinenuts.  Not only is the dish healthy, but I think it's pretty gorgeous with how colorful it turned out!

By the way, I obviously was not in my kitchen for this recipe, so I didn't include my normal step-by-step pictures.  However, it is so easy to make that you will have no problem doing this on your own without the photos.  Let's get to it!
