Golden Goddess Draped Top ~ Diane's Vintage Zest!

Golden Goddess Draped Top

I finally have another sewing project to share with you!  Truth be told, I finished it a few weeks ago, which I mentioned in my weekly post here.  It was so comfy and cute, that I ended up wearing it out to dinner the next night at La Tavolata!

Also, I wore it to the mimi g. conference on Day 1 with some leggings since I knew that I would have to be comfy and cool for all of that fabric shopping!  Side note: I wore my Peplum Pencil Skirt on Day 2.  :)

Without further ado, my Golden Goddess Draped Top!

The only problem with Lily is that she doesn't have any arms!  She doesn't completely show how the top drapes, but you get the gist.  :)

The "pattern" is actually traced from a cute open-weave maroon sweater that I got from Express about a year ago that ALWAYS gets cute compliments whenever I wear it.  The first top I made attempted was actually a bit snug in the midsection because the gold fabric wasn't stretchy enough to mimic the open knit of the original top.

This one fits perfectly!  I plan on wearing it off the shoulder with a camisole underneath, just like this.

For the fabric, I used a small scrap piece that I bought from the swap meet for $1.  Since I already made one fail top (which I'll most likely donate to a younger cousin), this used about half of the scrap.  Therefore, a top for less than 50 cents!

For all of you interested in my first attempt at serging, here is a peek at one of the inside seams.  It's probably not perfect, but I'm impressed!

All in all, I'm excited about this top that took about an hour (including serger threading time) and cost less than $.50.  I might just have to recreate it again!

Please excuse the photobombing leaf.  I didn't notice until I hauled Lily back inside!

Not bad for my first experience with the serger!  I think that I could start an addiction to knit garments now, based on this experience.  I'm anticipating that it won't go this smoothly again, but I'm crossing my fingers!

Do you use a serger and have any horror stories to share?  I'm scared that my beginner's luck will fade soon!

  1. Love your top! Did you use a pattern? My horror story - I was making a tailored shirt for my husband for our cotton wedding anniversary. I'd attached the collar, done button holes, sewn buttons and all I had to do was add the sleeves the cuffs and hem. While I was overlocking the shoulder seam, a piece of the shirt snuck underneath and was sewn into my seam. This would have been ok (just unpick and start again) except that it had been nipped by the knife, leaving a big hole just below the shoulder! This left me with only a few days to buy more fabric and start on a new shirt! Here's a link of the shirt I didn't destroy if you're interested: http://www.burdastyle.com/projects/jakob-with-two-piece-placket-facing-and-altered-collar

  4. Ugh. What a terrible tragedy to almost be done with a project and then destroy it. :( But the new shirt is awesome! My pattern was traced from a top that I already owned and then adjusted the second time around so it wasn't as snug. :)

  11. This is so cute. I'm seeing so many inspiring projects today with knits. I do not have a serger, but I would love to make a top like this.

  12. Wow! An hour and a 50 cent cost?! Nice! I'm always amazed and jealous at sewing projects like these. I had one bad experience and gave up. I need to try again though. It would be so awesome to sew my own clothes. Maybe I'll finally try a sewing class at joanns or something. Your top looks great! Thanks for sharing.

I’d love it if you would share this at my “That’s My Style” Link party this Friday!

  13. This turned out great! Love the fabric. The more you use your serger the better you get at it. I have had a serger for over 20 years - not the same one - I am on my 2nd one - it is an older Bernina and a work horse.

  14. It was! And super comfy too. :) Perfect for a long day of fabric shopping and lugging around a heavy bag!

  15. A zig-zag stitch will be your friend if you decide to make a similar top!

  16. Thank you! If you can't find a class for garments, you should check out an adult school/community center that offers sewing classes. That's how I took mine! It was only $40 for 8 weeks of 4 hour long classes. It's gone up since then, but still a great deal!

  17. Wow. $40 would be a great deal. I'll have to look around my area. I really want to learn. Thanks :)

  18. This is beautiful! I love the golden fabric! Oh I love my serger! Makes projects so much faster and more "professional" looking! Great job! I would LOVE to have you share this and anything else at my link party! Following you via facebook! http://www.madetobeamomma.com/2013/08/homemade-by-you-63.html#more

  20. Lovely serging! And this top seems to be as fast to sew as comfy to wear: I have a scrap of wool layin' (where?) that would be perfect... Great idea, Diane, thank you :)

  21. Oh my goodness! It's beautiful! I'm terrified to buy and learn how to use a sewing machine and I completely envy those who have one and make clothing with it!

  22. Wonderful top. And I love my serger and will never go back to sewing knits without one Even on my bad days with the serger, I don't regret having it.

  23. I totally agree with you about how professional serged garments look!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I don't have a tutorial since I just traced a top that I already own. Sorry! Thanks for the compliment!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Of course! It was totally quick to cut and sew. No marking or altering, which is usually so time consuming!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thanks! I still consider myself a newbie, and this was probably my quickest and easiest project so far!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Agreed! I used to wonder what the fuss was about sergers, and now I'm totally onboard. :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Great! I'll sew it and share, linking to your inspiration blog, when sewn ;)
    Thank you Diane!!!

  29. I love the top...super cute! I just wished you would show us how you did it step by step, like how you traced it and so on. This would make a great tutorial.

  30. Definitely a great idea! I'll put it on my to-do list. :)

  32. Beautiful and $.50!? What a great combination. Thanks for sharing at Inspire Us Thursday on Organized 31.

  33. Great top Diane, what a great price tag too! :) You did a great job with your serger - I'm avoiding mine just now as it keeps un-threading itself and I don't have the patience to sort it out at the moment!

Thanks for linking to a Round Tuit!

Hope you have a fabulous week!

  34. This is pretty awesome. I've done that also... a pattern from another piece of clothing. Sometimes it works great. When it does, it's wonderful. Blessings. Featuring you and pinning also. Linda

  35. I love it and it seems so much easier somehow. It's probably because I don't have to deal with that crazy pattern paper!

  36. I just got a serger for my birthday (we call them "overlockers" here in Australia) and I can't wait to try some knit tops for myself. This looks lovely! I'm going to have to go looking for patterns I think :D

  37. Love this style! Pinning:) Endorsed you on swerve. I'm there too:) Sew Sweet Vintage, Michele Reynolds.
