Black & White Challenge Update ~ Diane's Vintage Zest!

Black & White Challenge Update

*Update* See the finished garment here!

Here I am in London, and having been inspired by all of the fashion, I am positive that I am totally redoing my challenge garment. If you're not familiar with the challenge, read this post for the info on my sewing group on Facebook, and the Spring 2013 Black & White challenge. Remember, I get back just a couple of days before our deadline, so I'm going to beat my jet lag by working on this project!

I started with some houndstooth fabric and black knit, and used Simplicity 1699 to create a houndstooth peplum with black side panels and collar.

Here are the questionable results...

It doesn't look too bad on the hanger really, but I don't like a ton of things about it.

1. The sleeve length is very strange (although I haven't hemmed them yet).

2. The collar actually resembles a bow tie for some reason. Not cute at all!

3. The peplum is a bit short for me, and it looks even shorter than on the pattern envelope!

Well, when I get back home, I definitely want to bring the sleeves in. I'm also thinking about removing the collar altogether and making it a scoop neck instead. Hopefully the peplum length will end up looking longer after the adjustments, but we'll see.

Any suggestions from you guys?

  1. I love it!
Maybe, if you find it too short, you could add a "belt" between the top and the peplum?
It's difficult to decide, seeing it in the hanger!!!
    I still have to start...
Enjoy your European trip, if you want to take it a lottle longer, travel to North of Italy saying me "Ciao" ;)

  2. It does look good on the hanger. Do you have any shirts with raglan sleeves that you like? I'm just thinking that you can compare them and copy the sleeve design.

Have fun in London! I'll be there myself in a month and a half and can't wait to go to Liberty myself. :)

  3. I agree with you to remove the collar and make it a scoop neck the collar seem to give it a Jr. look. If you need to add length you can always add a waist band using the black fabric then reattached the peplum to that. Hope this helps can't wait to see the finished top!

  4. Hope you're having fun in London! I love the houndstooth and I think it looks good on the hanger, so forgive me if my comments don't totally apply once it's on you. :-)

I like bow ties (and generally think the collar looks great here) but perhaps you could enlarge it? It would be more exaggerated so maybe it would look less like a bow tie? You could also lose it altogther because I think the black and the pattern are striking enough on their own.

In looking at the pattern picture, I agree the sleeves are at a bit of an odd length. If you don't like it, you could hem it back so it's sleeveless, then maybe add a cap sleeve on?

As for the peplum, again it's hard to tell if this would work with your body type, but perhaps you could lengthen the bodice? Or lengthen the peplum/add a panel or something, perhaps in black?

Good luck - I think it's looking great already!

  5. I think it looks great! I'm not sure if I can be the best advice giver seeing as I haven't finished my shirt yet. I'm having issues too! You could always add different sleeves if you don't like the way those look.

I love the houndstooth--it's so cute.
