Ram Fam Pottery feature & GIVEAWAY! ~ Diane's Vintage Zest!

Ram Fam Pottery feature & GIVEAWAY!

*Update*: Ram Fam Pottery is no longer in business.  Thank you for your support!

I first found this wonderful family business at Artisanal LA, and I am so happy to have them here today!  For one thing, I tend to have lots of presents perfect for women or children, but I have been lacking in the men's department.  However, Ram Fam Pottery's awesome hooch jugs are pretty manly, so this feature probably tips the scales a bit, right?  Another reason I am excited for the feature today is because this would be a fantastic present for Father's Day next weekend.  Great timing!

Well, now that I have whet your appetite for the feature, I have another thing to add.  The awesome family behind Ram Fam Pottery is giving one of their awesome jugs to one of my readers!  Check out the giveaway at the bottom of the post, but first read through the interview, including a peek at one of the cutest jug drinkers that I've ever seen!

Tell me a little bit about yourself!

We started Ram Fam Pottery with the start of our family and first son Cosmo, who was born Jan 31, 2013…making us a true Ma and Pop family business!  As artists approaching life with a new baby, we were looking for something we could contribute to together to build and grow creatively, for our family.  We wanted to create a project where we were building a business around an object that signifies some of the closeness of family, friends, and community that we value.  Carlos makes the hooch jugs and sippers and Lissa creates the packaging and display aesthetics for craft fairs and store setups.  In July, we will be one year old.  In the course of the year, we were featured in Time Out LA and the LA Times.  We were invited to attend Artisanal LA, Eastside Handmade, Renegade Craft Festival, Altadena Farmers Market, and Artist and Fleas.  The jugs have been picked up in two stores; Kidd’s Jewelry Heist (South Pasadena) and Otherwild (Echo Park).  It has been a great first year!

Where did the name of your store come from?

Ram Fam Pottery is short for Ramirez Family Pottery (our family name).

What is your favorite item?

We love the Hooch Jug!  We have spent many a vacation with friends and family playing cards, sharing spirits, and creating great memories around a table with good food and good drinks.  The Hooch Jug fully embraces the feeling of family.  It is the well of many sippers.  It is a shared experience of many people drinking from the same source.  It was very important to us to make sure that it was fully functional, so all the glaze and clay is made in-house and is completely food safe.

What is your most popular item?

The Hooch Jug.

Where do you get the inspiration for your work?

The Hooch Jug is inspired by turn of the century American ceramics and classic moonshine bootlegging era jugs.

What makes your store unique?

Each item is made completely by hand, so there isn’t one item that is the same. We use our own clay and glaze recipes. Each Hooch Jug comes in a hand screen-printed burlap sack. We are interested in creating an item that has come from the hands of our family, into yours.

What is the toughest part about making your goods/your artistic process?

We are a family business with the demands of a family to keep up with, so making the jugs, packaging, marketing, and selling happens with the beautiful chaos of family, as well.  A sippy cup has been known to sit alongside a box of Hooch Jugs, on our way to a fair.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes, we do custom messages on the bottom of the jug. It has been a popular gift for groomsmen, Father’s day, wedding gifts and birthday presents. We need 4 weeks advance notice for the custom order.
