Triple Chocolate Stuffed Monkey Bread (with Milky Way Bites Centers!)

Oh. Em. Gee.  I'm not typically one for superlatives, but I have made the most delicious, gooey, chocolaty, creamy, and caramel-y monkey bread of my life.  It's so easy to prepare that you'll HAVE to make it immediately.  Honestly, I made it in practically no time, which is perfect for the tailgaiting parties that we're doing every Sunday (now that I'm into football).  And best of all, not only is the bread itself delish, there's a secret weapon inside...  Milky Way Bites!  And lucky you, I'm sharing the recipe AND a coupon for up to $2 off these bites that put the triple in my Triple Chocolate Stuffed Monkey Bread!

Really, it's the perfect dessert for game day because your guests can just pop off a piece and enjoy all of the deliciousness with just one hand.  If you don't want to include the sticky chocolate glaze (what's wrong with you?) because it might be too messy for your home (oh yeah...), then it is still ooey-gooey in the middle of each piece of monkey bread.

Really, don't hate me because there is the possibility that you might need to bake two: one for you, and one for your guests... and then let out your pants.  It's a good thing I sew!

Bon appetit!

A Vintage Zest original

Ingredients

  • 2 packages of Milky Way unwrapped bites (7 oz. each)
  • 2 packages of biscuits (17.3 oz. each)

  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Note 1: Make sure to buy the unwrapped bites, unless you don't mind unwrapping all those bites individually!

Note 2: I used reduced fat, wheat biscuits and no one noticed AT ALL.  At least you can fool yourself into thinking it's healthy!

Directions

1. Unwrap your biscuits and set them aside to rise.

2. Cut all of the Milky Ways Bites into half.  You will need 24 of them total, making 48 pieces.

3. Cut each of your 16 biscuits into three equal parts, yielding 48 pieces of dough.

4. Make a piece of monkey bread by...
A) Placing half of a Milky Ways Bites onto a stretched piece of biscuit dough
B) Smushing the bites slightly into a round-ish shape
C) Stretching the dough over the chocolate
D) Rolling it between your palms to create a nice ball!

5. Continue for all remaining pieces.

6. Next, combine the granulated sugar and the cocoa powder in a large resealable plastic bag.

7. Place all 48 balls of dough in the bag and shake to coat!

8. Place all of the dough balls a pan sprayed with nonstick spray.  (It's probably best to use a pretty Bundt pan, but mine was out of commission).  Reserve the remaining cocoa powder mixture for the glaze.

9. Next, in a small saucepan melt the butter.

10. Add the remaining cocoa powder mixture to the butter, adding 1 tablespoon of the milk at a time, as needed to thin the consistency slightly.

Here's where the recipe may differ slightly depending on how messy you want your guests to be!

11a. For the less messy version: pour ALL of the glaze on and between the monkey bread pieces.  Make sure it is as coated as possible.

11b. The messier version: Pour about 1/3 of the mixture on the bread just to moisten the pieces up a bit. Reserve the rest for a sticky glaze on top later!  I went with this version for the remaining photos.

12. Bake at 400F for 20 - 25 minutes.  The non-messy version will have a hardened glaze and be firm to the touch.  The messy version will be slightly caramelized on top and crusty.

13. After cooling, turn onto a serving plate.  For the non-messy version, you are done!  For the messy version, cover with the remaining chocolate glaze, which you will have to warm slightly beforehand.

14. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve!

By the way, I have an alternative method to serve this dessert for all of you that are interested.  For individual portions, place 2 - 3 of the balls in an oversized muffin tin.  Voila!  Instant portion control!  Well, maybe.

  1. I have never made monkey bread before but have always wanted to, sugar high - I'm all for it. Especially when it includes a good dose of Milky Ways!

  9. I did create the recipe, inspired by monkey breads that I've seen in the past. None of them used three kinds of chocolate though!
