Making Good - DIY Repurposed Succulent Planter

This week, I am bringing you an unexpected crafty post on a Monday!  Why?  I was invited by Agatha Lee of Green Issues by Agy to join the Making Good Repair Blog Train.  Since May 1st, a bunch of talented bloggers have been sharing their repairs and fixes for items, because we believe that  we can use our creativity to find a solution to a problem instead of just throwing it away.  Definitely check it out!

For my project, I originally had something else in mind... and I'm wondering if I bent the rules a little, now that I'm sharing my post.  That's me, always a rebel, even if by accident!

The item that I decided to use is the lasagna dish that had a hairline crack in it, after I made my fantastic Vegetarian Lasagna with Spinach, Mushrooms & Soy Crumbles.  It just was not safe for the oven anymore, so I decided to repurpose it into something completely different!

Here's a view of that crack.  So sad.  :(

So now that I think about it, I completely broke the rules and did not repair my project.  However, I did prolong the life of it, in a second career!  Instead of the kitchen, it now hangs out in the garden!

When my mom plants succulents in her fabulous garden, she likes to nurture them from little tiny cuttings in separate small containers (check out the applesauce containers on the left), then group them together in larger planters, before releasing them into the garden!

Voila, I had a new item for her to use!

Now here's what I did to transform something broken into something good!
The main thing I did was to make sure the crack was water tight.  I used a bit of white clay polymer to keep it together and made some custom vinyl appliqués for decoration.  So fun!

I chose the saying and the succulents to make it pretty and designed the layout, but I let her pick the color.  Least I could do, right?  ;)

And now she has a beautiful planter for her succulents, which looks great and is actually very easy to transport!  It can stand the sunny California heat and meets her need.  Also, it extended the life of an item that did not have to end up in the landfill.  Win-win!

By the way, here are some of her full-grown succulents hanging out in the garden.  :)

If you came here looking for a repair... I'm kicking myself for realizing that I upcycled something instead!  So if you're looking for a repair fix, check out this post where I repaired some straps on a tank top and then upcycled it into a beautiful maxi dress.  Or maybe you would like a tutorial on how I used some leftover pant hems into a sunglass sleeve!

Either way, thanks for visiting, and I hope you keep up with the rest of our train.  Also, I hope to see you again since I actually have a real repair coming up.  My favorite pair of flip-flops died, so I'm going to see if I can resuscitate them.  I hope so!

This post is part of a blog train hosted by Agatha from Green Issues by Agy on "Making Good". What is repair, and why do we even bother to repair the things we have?  Some see repair as a way of reconnecting with our possessions as we extend their lives. Others see it as a form of creative potential and an avenue to express their craft.  The rewards for mending varies from feeling immense satisfaction to prolonging the life of the product. Follow the “Making Good” blog train this month and see what we have repaired and reconnected with. Have you mended anything today?
